25-Year-Old Soccer Star Suddenly Collapses, Dies During Training
A 25-year-old Guatemalan soccer star collapsed during training and tragically died shortly after being rushed to hospital.
Marcos Menaldo, a defender who played for Deportivo Marquense, reported suffering breathing difficulties during the training session on Monday.
“The tragedy occurred at the Marquesa de la Ensenada Stadium where Menaldo received emergency CPR treatment on the pitch in San Marcos before being transferred to the Hospital de Especialidades where he died,” reports the Mirror.
Menaldo was a fan favorite after leading his team to the second division title last month.
“A young, dynamic and jovial person, this happens to him. It is quite strong and shocking because you lose not only a player, you lose a friend,” remarked Hernan Maldonado, Deportivo’s club president.
“They transferred him to the assistance centre where they did everything possible. But unfortunately, the death was confirmed,” he added.
The report notes that Menaldo’s death tragically followed that of Croatian footballer Marin Cacic, who died in similar circumstances just before Christmas after suddenly collapsing during training.
The 23-year-old was diagnosed with heart failure before being rushed to a nearby hospital but died on December 23rd.
