The driver of a pickup truck with Chiapas plates reportedly ignored orders to halt at an immigration checkpoint and tried to ram a patrol vehicle.

Officers determined there was an “imminent risk to their safety” and opened fire, the National Guard said in a statement.

“There were 13 migrants traveling in the pickup truck, who would have entered the country irregularly. They were eight Cubans, three from Ghana and one Brazilian, in addition to the driver,” La Jornada reports.

Following the shooting, a deceased man was discovered in the back of the vehicle. He was later identified as “Cristobal N.,” a Cuban national.

Four more passengers were wounded and taken to hospital for treatment.

A rifle was found inside the truck during an inspection, according to the local prosecutor.

Authorities say they don’t think this group of aliens was connected to the migrant caravan currently moving north towards the U.S. southern border.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
